Our Approach

Katalyst Health Hip Replacements

Minimally Invasive

We use the Röttinger technique, which is relatively new in the UK. Unlike traditional ‘posterior approach’ total hip replacement surgery, which cuts deep into muscles and tissue to access the hip joint, this innovative technique involves making only a tiny incision and stretching rather than cutting through muscle to avoid tissue damage and scarring.

Katalyst Health Hip Replacements

Simply Straightforward

For most people, it is a day case procedure. You will be able to get up and walk around within hours of your surgery, with minimal pain and swelling and in many cases without crutches.

Because this unique approach does not involve cutting through muscles, there is less tissue trauma and minimal scarring. Most patients do not need to restrict their movement immediately after surgery and are walking without crutches within hours.

  • Minimal scarring and tissue damage
  • A quick return to your everyday life and activities

Fast Recovery

There is less swelling or damage to surrounding tissue than in traditional surgical approaches. The result of this is that your ability to sit comfortably, bend or do everyday tasks will not be restricted, so you can return to your daily life with less risk of dislocating your new joint.

Most people can walk on the same day as their surgery, with minimal need for pain relief.

  • Shortened healing period
  • Increased mobility within hours

Low Risk

With any hip surgery, there is a risk of complications during and after the procedure. These include bleeding, infection, or injury to nearby nerves. However, The London Hip Clinic’s Röttinger method means that compared with traditional surgery:

  • Expert anaesthetic team
  • Lower risk of bleeding and other complications
  • Lower risk of hip dislocation following surgery
  • No damage to the essential muscles around the hip
  • Pain and swelling are reduced with less need for pain relief

Hip Replacement FAQ

No, there is no waiting list for our hip replacement surgery. So you can book your surgery immediately and have it in days, rather than months or years on the NHS.

Our hip replacement technique is less invasive and has a lower impact on the body than traditional methods. We have perfected our approach to make the surgery as safe as possible, allowing patients to recover quickly. Additionally, our surgery is affordable, making it accessible to more people.

This type of surgery works well for patients who need a total hip replacement so they can return to their normal active lifestyle as quickly as possible. However, if you have issues with more than one joint, or you also have other health problems, this procedure might not be the best option for you. You’ll be able to discuss your expectations with your consultant during your first appointment and they’ll be able to advise you about the best type of surgery.

Most people who opt for this type of minimally invasive hip replacement procedure are aiming to return to an active lifestyle, including sport, without any restrictions as quickly as possible.

The benefits of our hip replacement surgery include:

  • A safe and minimally invasive procedure
  • Faster recovery times
  • Lower risk of complications
  • More affordable pricing
  • Back on your feet faster

There will be some discomfort, as there is with any surgery. But, because this surgery is quicker and less invasive, with a smaller incision than other hip replacement procedures, you should have minimal pain. Most patients record their pain level at 2-3 out of 10 after their surgery – and, in most cases, significantly less pain than before surgery. Traditional hip replacement surgery involves a larger incision and significant cutting of muscle and tissue, so there is more pain and scarring. Our less invasive method involves minimal tissue damage and no muscle cutting. That’s why you’ll be pain-free and mobile much faster.

Hip replacement surgery is carried out by our world-class surgical team, including two internationally renowned hip surgeons who specialise in the Rottinger method. They are supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team of theatre nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Hip replacement surgery is considered a safe procedure, with more than a million people undergoing a total hip replacement globally each year. Our approach uses an innovative technique that minimises damage to muscle and tissue, resulting in less pain, and faster healing, with a low risk of post-operative complications.

Dislocation following total hip replacement surgery is a concern for patients. In the United Kingdom, this occurs in approximately 1 to 5% of cases, primarily within the initial weeks post-surgery.

Given that the UK performs a substantial number of hip replacements annually—approximately 100,000—the occurrence of dislocation warrants attention.

Dislocation is a significant complication that often necessitates corrective measures, involving the removal of the existing components and subsequent replacement with new ones. This process does not guarantee success.

However, our distinctive approach has yielded remarkable results. In a series of over 3000 hip replacement surgeries, performed by a single surgeon, we have achieved a remarkable outcome: zero instances of dislocation. This highlights the efficacy of our approach and the potential to substantially reduce the risk of this complication.

In most cases, you can leave the hospital on the same day. And because the procedure is soft tissue (eg muscle) preserving, your rehabilitation and recovery should be straightforward.

Yes. We understand that many people struggle to cover the cost of major surgery like a hip replacement. That’s why we offer three payment options: self-pay, a medical loan, or medical insurance. Our medical loan option allows you to split the cost into 6-12 months of interest-free payments.

We’ll explain your surgery in detail, so you’ll know what to expect at every stage, from treatment to recovery, including the risks and complications. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss what’s involved before you’re invited to consent to the procedure

After your procedure, you’ll have an appointment with our physiotherapist. They’ll be able to advise you about how to optimise your procedure and recovery by strengthening the muscles around the hip.

Before you return home, our physiotherapist will ensure you feel confident walking up and down stairs and doing other everyday activities.

You’ll also be given a follow-up appointment as well as a personalised rehabilitation programme, which you can either follow with one of our team or with a physiotherapist closer to home.
